Managing Your Resources – Chicago

Managing your resources involves knowing the costs associated with attending school, as well as the funding sources you will use to pay those costs. Download this budget sheet and mark your expenses and your resources. Simply subtract your expenses from your resources.

Cost of Attendance is an estimation of what it will cost for you to attend The Chicago School. These include both direct costs and indirect costs.

Direct costs are the actual price of tuition and fees you are charged. Tuition costs usually decrease as your program progresses. Your tuition for the first two years of your doctoral program will probably be the most expensive if you follow the typical program schedule. The majority of your credit hours should be taken in the first two years. 

Indirect costs are additional expenses you are likely to incur while attending school. These include books and supplies, personal expenses, room and board, and transportation. Your lifestyle can have a big impact on this cost category. Consider such living expenses as clothing, laundry, haircuts, phone, entertainment, etc. Try to reevaluate your priorities so you can stay within your budget.

Estimating your cost per semester: (One semester equals 4.5 months.)

Tuition is the number of credit hours multiplied by the cost per credit hour.

Utilizing Resources

  • Institutional resources include scholarships and fellowships offered by the school.  To apply you must complete the Fellowship and Scholarship Application. The Fellowship and Scholarship Application will be available online after December 1, 2007, at www.thechicagoschool.edu/content.cfm/financing_your_education.
  • Federal resources include Federal Stafford Student Loans and Federal Work Study.  To apply you must complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) each year.  For fall 2008 you should complete the 2008-09 FAFSA, available after January 1, 2008.  You can get the FAFSA application at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
  • Other resources can include family funds, work earnings, employer tuition benefits, scholarships offered from other sources, or private student loans called alternative loans.  Read more of our suggestions for how to finance your education.
